Monday May 16 - Kizhi, Russia

DAY 8, Monday - Kizhi
This morning, arrive in Kizhi, a small island featuring one of the most impressive wooden structures ever erected, the Kizhi Church of Transfiguration. The Church is the island's most famous architectural landmark and largely responsible for making Kizhi one of the most frequented tourist attractions in Russia. It features 22 cupolas of striking intricacy and was built without using a single nail. Visit the Church and Open Air Wooden Architecture Museum. Enjoy dinner and the evening at leisure on board.
Overnight: Cruise
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

We were sailing for most of the day, it was beautiful and we sat in the sun on the upper deck. We passed through some more locks.

Around noon it suddenly got much colder and we were surrounded by ice floes.

They always have plenty of activities to keep you occupied should you be interested.
We preferred to sit and read. I do not relax easily and this trip is interesting in that I can sit and read, unload my cameras, blog (ready for upload when we finally have internet connectivity). It is relaxing and we really are getting used to this type of travel.

Lunch was at 1:30 today and the only off-shore activity was at 6pm (delayed to 6:30) when we arrived at Kizhi Island for a walking tour to see the Church of the Transfiguration with its twenty-two shimmering domes in three tiers considered to be the ultimate of the Russian fairytale architecture.
There was a walking tour to see some splendid examples of the 18th century architecture including typical wooden houses and a windmill.

Tonight  was the Pirates' Dinner where guests were to dress up. In the afternoon there was a Pirates' scavenger hunt which got rather heated between the French and English teams. Thankfully the English won and a couple of our table mates were on the winning team.
